Learning how to perform back up in your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch

Select a backup plan or a method
Selecting the backup plan or strategy that is best suited for your device requirements. And in case you require an alternative backup, then you can arrange one in iCloud and another in iTunes.
Choice #1: iCloud
1.    Get connected to a Wi-Fi network via your device.
2.    Now, go to Settings, then scroll down and select iCloud.
3.    Next, scroll down again, and select Backup, and ensure that the iCloud Backup is turned on.
4.    Now select Back Up. (Note : you need to stay connected to your Wi-Fi network till the process gets finished)
5.    Ensure that the process of backup gets completed: This can be verified following given sequence of steps

Go to Settings > select iCloud >now select Storage >then, Manage Storage, then select your device. The backup should appear in the details with the time and backup size.
Automatically schedule back up with iCloud Backup feature
To schedule iCloud back up of your device every day, automatically, you need to follow below given sequence to steps:

  1. Ensure that iCloud Backup state is turned on in Settings > iCloud > Backup.
  2. Let your device be connected to a power source.
  3. Also, ensure your device is connected to a wi-fi Network.
  4. Ensure, your device screen is locked.
  5. Examine the availability of sufficient space in iCloud to hold the backup.
Choice #2: iTunes
1.     Open iTunes and then connect your device to the computer. 
2.     In case, a message gets displayed, asking for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, then follow the onscreen steps. In case you do not remember your passcode, then seek get help.
3.     Choose your iPad, iPhone, or iPod when it is displayed in iTunes.  
4.     In case you want to save Health and Activity data from your iOS device or Apple Watch, you require to encrypt your backup: Choose the box Known as Encrypt [device] backup and then, create a password. Please note the password carefully, as there is no provision to recover the iTunes backup without password.

In case you don't require to save your Health and Activity data, you can perform a backup that isn't encrypted. Just select “Back Up Now” option, as shown in the screen below:
5.     When the process gets completed, then you can validate if your backup finished successfully or not by going on to

iTunes Preferences > Devices

(In case you're using iTunes for Windows operating system, then
select “Edit” > “Devices” from the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window).


Your device must contain back up with name, and must be displayed with the date and time that iTunes created, performing the backup. In case you encrypt your backup, then you must also see  beside the name of your device.
